Ingredients

  • - Hellmann'S Real Mayonnaise 250ml
  • - The Tofoo Co. Naked Tofu
  • 50G Pepper Black Ground BWFO
  • - Forest Whole Foods Ltd Organic White Breadcrumbs
  • - Schwartz Garlic Powder 480g
  • 1 L Crisp N Dry Oil
  • - Amoy Dark Soy Sauce
  • 750 G Top-Op Table Salt Drums
  • 1.5 Kg Best In Plain Flour 1.5 Kg

Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat your oven to 200°C (392°F) or set up a frying station if you prefer to fry the tofu.
  2. 2. Drain the tofu and press it between two plates for 10-15 minutes to remove excess moisture. Once pressed, slice the tofu into even pieces, about 1 cm thick.
  3. 3. In a shallow bowl, mix plain flour with a pinch of salt, a pinch of ground black pepper, and 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder. This will be your dry coating mixture.
  4. 4. In another shallow bowl, prepare a wet batter by mixing 2 tablespoons of water with 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise until smooth. This will help the breadcrumbs stick to the tofu.
  5. 5. Place breadcrumbs in a third shallow bowl. This will be the final coating for the tofu.
  6. 6. Coat each tofu slice first in the flour mixture, then dip it into the mayonnaise batter, and finally coat it thoroughly with the breadcrumbs. Ensure each piece is evenly coated.
  7. 7. Heat a generous amount of cooking oil in a frying pan over medium heat. Alternatively, lightly grease a baking tray if you prefer to bake the tofu.
  8. 8. If frying, cook the breaded tofu slices for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy. If baking, place the tofu slices on the greased tray and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through, until crispy and golden.
  9. 9. While the tofu is cooking, prepare the katsu sauce. In a small saucepan, combine 2 tablespoons of soy sauce with 2 tablespoons of ketchup and 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce (or a vegan alternative). Heat the mixture over low heat, stirring occasionally, until warmed through.
  10. 10. Serve the crispy tofu slices with the katsu sauce drizzled on top or on the side for dipping. Optionally, pair with steamed rice and a side of vegetables for a complete meal.
