Instructions

  1. 1. Rinse masoor dal and rice thoroughly under running water and soak them for 20 minutes.
  2. 2. Chop tomatoes, onions, green chilies, and garlic finely for the base of the khichdi.
  3. 3. Heat ghee or oil in a large pot, add cumin seeds, and let them splutter for a few seconds.
  4. 4. Add chopped onions, garlic, and green chilies, and sauté until the onions turn golden brown.
  5. 5. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and cook until they soften and release their juices.
  6. 6. Add turmeric powder and salt, mixing well with the sautéed ingredients for even seasoning.
  7. 7. Drain the soaked dal and rice, then add them to the pot, stirring to coat them in the spice mixture.
  8. 8. Pour in water and bring the mixture to a boil over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
  9. 9. Reduce heat to low, cover the pot, and simmer until the dal and rice are fully cooked and tender.
