Instructions
- 1. In a medium saucepan, combine ketchup, brown sugar, bourbon, smoked paprika, and apple cider vinegar. Cook over medium heat for 8 minutes, stirring frequently, until the sauce thickens. Set aside.
- 2. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Add the sliced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook for 12 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Set aside.
- 3. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, minced garlic, onion powder, smoked paprika, and bourbon. Season with salt and pepper, and gently mix until just combined. Do not overmix.
- 4. Divide the beef mixture into 4 equal portions and shape into patties, about 2 cm thick. Make a small indentation in the center of each patty to prevent it from puffing up during cooking.
- 5. Heat a grill or grill pan over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grill grates or pan. Cook the burger patties for 4-5 minutes per side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness (internal temperature should be 70°C for well-done).
- 6. In the last 2 minutes of cooking, place a slice of cheddar cheese on each patty and cover the grill or pan to allow the cheese to melt.
- 7. Lightly toast the burger buns on the grill or in a toaster for about 1 minute.
- 8. Assemble the burgers: Spread a generous layer of the bourbon BBQ sauce on the bottom bun, place the patty with melted cheddar on top, add a spoonful of caramelized onions, and finish with lettuce. Top with the other half of the bun.
- 9. Serve the Sweet Bourbon Cheddar Burgers immediately with your favorite sides like fries or a fresh salad.
