Instructions

  1. 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, za'atar, garlic powder, smoked paprika, ground cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until the spices are evenly distributed.
  2. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat for 2 minutes. Add the spiced ground beef to the skillet and cook for 8-10 minutes, breaking it up with a wooden spoon, until browned and fully cooked.
  3. 3. While the beef cooks, prepare the yogurt sauce by mixing the plain yogurt, lemon juice, and minced garlic in a small bowl. Add a pinch of salt and stir until smooth. Set aside.
  4. 4. Warm the pita breads in a dry skillet over medium heat for 1-2 minutes on each side or until soft and pliable. Alternatively, wrap them in foil and warm in a preheated oven at 180°C (350°F) for 5 minutes.
  5. 5. To assemble, spread a generous layer of the yogurt sauce inside each warmed pita. Add a handful of shredded lettuce and a few slices of tomatoes and cucumbers.
  6. 6. Spoon the cooked za'atar beef into the pita, ensuring an even distribution. Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley and crumbled feta cheese for added flavor.
  7. 7. Serve immediately with a side of pickled vegetables or a simple salad, if desired. Enjoy the fresh, bold flavors of the Middle East!
