Instructions

  1. 1. Preheat the oven to 220°C (200°C fan) or gas mark 7. Line a baking tray with parchment paper.
  2. 2. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the sliced onions, a pinch of salt, and 1 teaspoon of sugar. Cook for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized. Remove from heat and set aside.
  3. 3. While the onions cook, prepare the flatbread base. Place the flatbreads on the lined baking tray and brush each with a light layer of olive oil.
  4. 4. Spread 2 tablespoons of crème fraîche evenly over each flatbread, leaving a small border around the edges.
  5. 5. Distribute the caramelized onions evenly across the flatbreads. Top with the shredded ham and grated cheddar cheese.
  6. 6. Bake the flatbreads in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbling and the edges of the flatbreads are crisp.
  7. 7. Remove from the oven and sprinkle with fresh thyme leaves for an aromatic finish. Slice into portions and serve immediately.
