Prawn Gassi is a traditional coastal delicacy from the Konkan region of India, known for its flavorful coconut-based curry infused with spices and tamarind. Paired with steamed rice, this comforting dish is a perfect blend of seafood and South Indian flavors.
Ingredients
- 100 g Curry Leaves
- 100 g Coriander Leaves
- 10 pcs Prawns
- - Grated Coconut
- 100 g Tamarind
- 1 kg Rice
- 100 g Dhaniya Gavran Premium
- 100 g Jeera
- - Dry Red Chillies
- 100 g Garlic
- loose Ginger
- 20 g Turmeric Powder
- 500 g Onion
- 100 g Yellow Mustard Seeds
- 200 ml Mustard Oil
- 100 g Salt
Instructions
- 1. Clean and devein the prawns, rinse thoroughly, and pat them dry. Set aside.
- 2. In a small bowl, soak the tamarind in 1/4 cup of warm water for 5 minutes, then extract the pulp by straining the liquid. Discard the solids.
- 3. Grind grated coconut, coriander seeds, cumin seeds, dried red chilies, garlic, ginger, and turmeric powder into a smooth paste using 1/2 cup of water.
- 4. Heat oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add curry leaves and chopped onions, sautéing until the onions are golden brown.
- 5. Add the ground coconut-spice paste to the pan and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently to release the flavors.
- 6. Pour in 2 cups of water and the tamarind pulp, then bring the mixture to a simmer. Add salt to taste.
- 7. Add the cleaned prawns to the curry and cook for 7-8 minutes until the prawns are tender and cooked through. Remove from heat.
- 8. Serve the prawn gassi hot with freshly steamed rice. Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
