About this recipe

These crispy and flavorful fried bean cakes are made with black-eyed peas and seasoned with onion and spices. Perfect as a vegan dinner entree or a satisfying snack.

Ingredients

  • 1 pack (500 g) Jairaj Black Eye Chawli
  • 100 g Sambar Onion Peeled
  • 1 kg Tata Salt (Vacuum Evaporated Iodised)
  • 1 pack (100 g) Tata Sampann Pure Black Pepper Powder
  • 850 g Oleev Smart Vitafit Edibale Vegetable Oil

Instructions

  1. 1. Soak 6 oz of black-eyed peas in cold water for a few minutes.
  2. 2. Dehusk the black-eyed peas by pulsing them in a blender for a few seconds.
  3. 3. Transfer the peas to a large bowl, add water, and drain to remove husks. Repeat this process several times until the husks are completely removed.
  4. 4. Blend the dehusked peas until very fine, ensuring the mixture is thick and smooth.
  5. 5. Finely chop 1 onion and add it to the blended peas.
  6. 6. Add 1 tsp salt and 1/2 tsp black pepper to the mixture. Mix thoroughly to combine.
  7. 7. Heat vegetable oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
  8. 8. Using a spoon, scoop small portions of the mixture into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, flipping occasionally for even cooking.
  9. 9. Remove the fried cakes from the oil and place them on a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
  10. 10. Serve the Akara cakes warm as a dinner entree or enjoy them as a snack.
