Ingredients

  • 500 g Toor Dal
  • 1 kg Rice
  • 500 g Onion
  • - Tomato Ketchup
  • 500 g Tomato - Hybrid
  • - Cumin Seeds / Jeera Seeds-250 Gms
  • 20 g Turmeric Powder
  • 100 g Salt
  • 200 ml Mustard Oil
  • 1 kg Water Chestnuts
  • - Coriander Powder

Instructions

  1. 1. Rinse the toor dal and rice thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear.
  2. 2. Dice the onion and tomato into small pieces and set them aside for cooking.
  3. 3. Heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds, letting them sizzle for a few seconds.
  4. 4. Add the diced onion to the cooker and sauté until it turns translucent, about 3 minutes.
  5. 5. Mix in the chopped tomato, turmeric powder, and red chili powder, cooking until the tomato softens.
  6. 6. Add the rinsed toor dal and rice to the cooker, stirring to coat them with the spices.
  7. 7. Pour in the water and season with salt, mixing well to combine all ingredients.
  8. 8. Close the pressure cooker lid and cook on medium heat for 3 whistles, then turn off the heat.
  9. 9. Allow the pressure to release naturally before opening the cooker lid.
  10. 10. Stir the khichdi gently and garnish with freshly chopped coriander leaves before serving.
