Frequently asked questions
- Why does the recipe use white vinegar, and can it be substituted?
- White vinegar is used to provide acidity, balance the sweetness of the sugar, and preserve the relish. If you need a substitute, apple cider vinegar can work, but it may slightly alter the flavor profile by adding a mild fruity note.
- How can I tell when the relish has reached the right consistency?
- The relish is ready when it thickens to a jam-like consistency and no longer appears watery. Stir occasionally during simmering to ensure even cooking and prevent sticking; the mixture should coat the back of a spoon when done.
- Can I adjust the sweetness level in this recipe?
- Yes, you can reduce the sugar to suit your taste. However, keep in mind that the sugar contributes not only to sweetness but also to the relish's texture and preservation. If reducing sugar, monitor the consistency closely as it may take longer to thicken.
- What is the best way to store the Halal Spiced Tomato Relish?
- Transfer the cooled relish into sterilized jars with airtight lids to prevent spoilage. Store in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks, or freeze in freezer-safe containers for longer storage. Ensure jars are properly sterilized to maintain freshness.
