A fragrant Bengali-style steamed fish recipe with mustard seeds and poppy seed paste, cooked in mustard oil for a perfect sweet-savory balance. Served best with steamed rice.
Ingredients
- - Mustard Seeds
- 250 Gms Poppy Seeds
- 250g Green Chilli
- 200 ml Mustard Oil
- 20 g Turmeric Powder
- 10G Salt
- 500 G Sugar
Instructions
- Step 1: Blend soaked mustard seeds, poppy seeds, 2 green chilies, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt into a smooth paste using minimal water.
- Step 2: Rub the Bhetki fish fillets with a pinch of turmeric powder and salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Step 3: Spread the banana leaf (or use parchment paper for convenience) and grease it lightly with mustard oil.
- Step 4: Coat the fish fillets evenly with the mustard-poppy seed paste. Drizzle mustard oil generously over the fish.
- Step 5: Add 2 slit green chilies and sprinkle a dash of sugar (optional). Wrap the fish fillets in the banana leaf securely.
- Step 6: Steam the wrapped fish in a steamer or pressure cooker (without the whistle) for about 20 minutes.
- Step 7: Remove the steamed fish and let it rest for 2 minutes before serving. Serve hot with freshly steamed rice.
