A quintessential Bengali fish curry with a rich, aromatic mustard-poppy seed paste, cooked in mustard oil for a deliciously authentic lunch experience.
Ingredients
- 250 Gms Poppy Seeds
- 500 ml Water
- 200 ml Mustard Oil
- 250g Green Chilli
- 20 g Turmeric Powder
- 10G Salt
- 250g Coriander
Instructions
- Step 1: Marinate the fish steaks with turmeric powder and a pinch of salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
- Step 2: Heat mustard oil in a pan until it starts to smoke gently. Fry the fish steaks on medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Remove and set aside.
- Step 3: Grind the soaked mustard seeds and poppy seeds into a fine paste using a mortar and pestle or blender. Add a pinch of salt and 1 green chili during grinding to balance flavors.
- Step 4: In the same pan, heat a little more mustard oil if needed. Add the mustard-poppy seed paste and cook for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
- Step 5: Add turmeric powder and green chilies to the pan, followed by water. Stir well to create a smooth gravy.
- Step 6: Carefully place the fried fish steaks into the gravy. Simmer for 8-10 minutes on low heat, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Step 7: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with plain steamed rice.
