About this recipe

A quintessential Bengali fish curry with a rich, aromatic mustard-poppy seed paste, cooked in mustard oil for a deliciously authentic lunch experience.

Ingredients

  • 250 Gms Poppy Seeds
  • 500 ml Water
  • 200 ml Mustard Oil
  • 250g Green Chilli
  • 20 g Turmeric Powder
  • 10G Salt
  • 250g Coriander

Instructions

  1. Step 1: Marinate the fish steaks with turmeric powder and a pinch of salt. Set aside for 10 minutes.
  2. Step 2: Heat mustard oil in a pan until it starts to smoke gently. Fry the fish steaks on medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Remove and set aside.
  3. Step 3: Grind the soaked mustard seeds and poppy seeds into a fine paste using a mortar and pestle or blender. Add a pinch of salt and 1 green chili during grinding to balance flavors.
  4. Step 4: In the same pan, heat a little more mustard oil if needed. Add the mustard-poppy seed paste and cook for 2-3 minutes on medium heat.
  5. Step 5: Add turmeric powder and green chilies to the pan, followed by water. Stir well to create a smooth gravy.
  6. Step 6: Carefully place the fried fish steaks into the gravy. Simmer for 8-10 minutes on low heat, allowing the flavors to meld.
  7. Step 7: Garnish with fresh coriander leaves and serve hot with plain steamed rice.
