Frequently asked questions
- Why is it important to soak the millet before cooking?
- Soaking the millet helps to soften the grains and reduces cooking time, ensuring an even texture in the final dish. It also aids in better digestion by reducing anti-nutrients like phytic acid present in millets.
- How can I adjust the spice level in Masala Sprout Millet Upma?
- To reduce the spice level, you can decrease the amount of green chilies and red chili powder used. Alternatively, for more heat, add extra green chilies or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
- What is the role of sprouts in this recipe, and can I skip them?
- Sprouts are a key ingredient as they provide a boost of protein and texture to the dish. If you don’t have sprouts, you can replace them with cooked lentils or chickpeas for a similar nutritional profile.
- How do I know when the millet is fully cooked and ready to serve?
- The millet is cooked when it absorbs all the water, becomes fluffy, and has a soft but slightly chewy texture. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and ensure even cooking.
- Can I make Masala Sprout Millet Upma ahead of time and reheat it later?
- Yes, you can prepare the upma ahead of time and store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat it on the stovetop with a splash of water to restore moisture, or microwave it for 1-2 minutes.
